Inside Move: 'Idol' stays close to 'Home'
Daughtry song replaces Powter's 'Bad Day'

If history is any guide, millions of Americans will soon know the words to a song called "Home" by heart.
The producers of "American Idol" have chosen the Chris Daughtry- sung ballad to serve as the background music for this year's contestant eliminations. Last year, bestowing a similar honor on Daniel Powter's "Bad Day" turned that song into a monster hit.Unfortunately for the "Idol" producers, Powter was signed to Warner Bros. As a result, his record label reaped big coin, while the "Idol" camp got bubkas.It's no surprise, then, that this year's exit song comes from Daughtry, a band fronted by 2006 "American Idol" contender Chris Daughtry -- and signed to RCA/19, the official "Idol" record label.But Iain Pirie, head of 19 Entertainment U.S., said the song's selection wasn't a matter of keeping things all in the family.Back in October, Pirie had a meeting with "Idol" exec producer and 19 exec Nigel Lythgoe. Given Lythgoe's role in helping launch Daughtry, Pirie figured he'd want to hear some tracks from the group's upcoming album.
I brought a rough version of 'Home' and played it for Nigel. He called up Simon Fuller right away, and they both agreed right away that the song had the sentiment to be the perfect 'Idol' exit song," Pirie told Daily Variety. "It seemed to fit perfectly."Pirie said Daughtry penned the lyrics to "Home" before he was an "Idol" contestant, with no clue that it might ever end up as a weekly fixture of the show.It's unclear if or when "Home" will be released as a single. First track off the disc, "It's Not Over," is still climbing the charts, and there's been talk that the song "Over You" will be the next single.Of course, in the digital era, consumers may simply decide to make "Home" the de facto next single by simply downloading it from iTunes and other music services.Whatever the song's fate, Daughtry's debut disc just went double platinum, with 2 million units sold.
